How Nutrition Impacts Mobility in Elderly People


We often think about how nutrition impacts the development of diseases. However, we rarely consider how a person’s diet might affect their mobility over time. Physical function is crucial as we age. It includes the ability to dress one’s self, take a walk, and accomplish daily tasks. Mobility is vital for the overall well-being of elderly people. So, how does diet affect mobility in aging individuals?
A large study was conducted, looking specifically at women and their dietary habits over a long period of time. The study showed a significant correlation between nutritional value and mobility. Those with healthier diets experienced fewer problems with physical function. These diets included more fruits and vegetables, fewer sugary drinks and less alcohol. Specific foods most correlated with improved mobility were oranges, orange juice, apples and pears, romaine lettuce, and walnuts.
As we age, it is important to consider how nutrition affects our lives. Healthy diets not only help to prevent disease, they also improve mobility and can have a positive effect on mental health. Educating the elderly population is a key factor in helping them improve their quality of life. The high cost of healthy food is also a problem for aged people living on a fixed income. These are issues we should tackle as a society to assist elderly individuals.
